Modernist Buildings

Modernist Buildings

As you can see, Gaudí is the principal architect of Barcelona. He gives Barcelona an originality that other cities do not have. You can visit some of the buildings that Gaudí designed. Gaudí did the majority of his work during a movement called “Modernism” between 1888 and 1911, and Barcelona is one of the most well known cities for this movement. The most famous buildings are the Casa Mila also called “La Pedrera”, la Illa de la Discordia, the Casa Batllo, and the Casa Amattler (by Josep Puig i Cadafalch). They are all located in Passeig de Gracia. One other modernist building by Gaudí is the Palau Güell near Las Ramblas.

Montjuic Hill

Montjuïc Hill

Montjuïc is a mountain located a bit far from Barcelona’s center, but it is worth it. There are two main attractions there: The impressive Montjuic castle which has a rich and dark history and offers an amazing view of Barcelona and the Poble Espanyol which was built for the Barcelona 1929 World Fair and Universal exposition. It was an architectural showcase village of Spain’s different architectural styles. It was so popular that the city kept it after the world exhibition ended.

The Montjuic Magic Fountain

Park Güell

This park is located in “El Carmel”, a small mountain in Barcelona. It was designed by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1914. Park Güell is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of Gaudí’s most artistic works. Park Güell is known for its breathtaking panoramic view of the whole city and its unique architectural style elements that have a strong connection with nature. This park was supposed to be a private and exclusive residential village for 60 houses, according to what Josep Güell asked Gaudí. However, when Josep Güell died in 1923, it was donated to Barcelona’s city as a public park.

Bunkers del Carmel

Bunkers del Carmel

Bunkers El Carmel is a set of abandoned and remote anti-aircraft defenses with one of the most scenic overlooks of the city. During the Spanish Civil War it was used to prevent aircraft warfare. Later on, it became one of the last shanty towns to be established. Despite being popularly known as Bunkers, there has never been any bunker at the top of the Turó de la Rovira, only an anti-aircraft warfare and its facilities. During the years prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, flats were granted to the inhabitants of the barracks (the “green flats” in Can Baró). And all the shanties were overthrown, leaving the Turó de la Rovira abandoned.

The habitants of the nearby neighborhoods enjoyed the little-known views of the whole city of Barcelona. But year after year the bunkers became well known and nowadays, it is one of the best viewpoints in Barcelona.
