Two myths: Barcelona was founded 2000 years ago by Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal, under the name of Barkenon, (Barcelino or Barci Nova), or by Hercules, who sailed with the Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece, travelling across the Mediterranean in nine ships. During a storm, one of the ships wrecked on the Catalan coast. Hercules and the crew were delighted by the landscapes and founded Barca Nona (Ninth Ship). Barcelona was then invaded by the Visigoths and the Muslims, and later became the capital of the Counts of Barcelona, and when merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, one of the most important cities of the Crown of Aragon.. It is now an important cultural centre and tourist destination with a rich cultural heritage. Particularly renowned are architectural works of Gaudí and Muntaner.
