OF THE SPIRIT & THE NATURE
Montserrat is a 4000 feet high mountain with mysterious towering rocks forming a natural wall around the monastery of the Black Virgin, the central point of attraction. Ignatius of Loyola and Pope John Paul II, like thousands of pilgrims, visited this holy place built in a natural park rich of flora and fauna, with paths, stairs, caves, chapels and hermitages.
After the guided tour, you can visit the museum, with its 5 collections ranging from archaeology of the biblical East to modern art. Take the rack railway, or the funicular, offering spectacular views. Shop for local products or discover the area on your own. Also of interest is a library of nearly 300,000 volumes; the oldest boys' choir in Europe, La Escalonia, a basilica full of paintings, gold lamps and decorated chapels.
Next stop: Wine region of Penedès. The tour goes on: an hour from Barcelona lies a valley of white pines, rosemary and bush plants surrounded by mountains. The Codorníu family goes back to 1551 and is known for a wide range of wine styles, especially the white and rosé Cava. Josep Puig i Cadalfach designed the new winery and its cellars were declared a Monument of National Historical Artistic Merit by King Juan Carlos I. Learn the processes, from harvesting through the fermentation to the actual bottling of the grapes, and taste the wines.
