SAINT LUKE AND THE BLACK MADONNA

According to the Catholic tradition, Saint Luke the Evangelist -- patron saint of students, physicians, butchers, and artists -- carved the statue of the Black Madonna of Montserrat, La Moreneta, around 50 AD. It was then brought from Greece to Spain and hidden from the Moors in the Santa Cova, the Holy Grotto), where it was rediscovered in 880 AD.
