Girona, Figueres & Dali
2000 YEARS OF HISTORY
Girona (or Gerona) is at the confluence of the rivers Ter, Onyar, Galligants and Güell with a population of 95,000. It was first inhabited by the Iberians and the Romans (who built a fortification). The Jewish community flourished until 1492 when the Catholics drove them away. In 1809 it was conquered by Napoleon and the walls of the city were destroyed in the 19th century. Today it is alive with cultural activities, museums, restaurants, tourist services and events: in May, El Temps de Flors (A Time for Flowers) is one of the most colourful Festivals: the Gothic Quarter is entirely decorated with plants and florals exhibiting a multitude of hues, shapes and smells.
Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, primer marquès de Púbol, was born in Figueres in 1904. In 1929, he collaborated with Luis Buñuel on the script of Un chien andalou, then officially joined the Surrealist Group led by André Breton and met his future wife Gala, who at then was married to the poet Paul Èluard. The Dalí Theatre-Museum replaced the town's former Municipal Theatre which was destroyed in the Spanish Civil War, and includes some of the painter's greatest masterpieces as well as earlier works.
