Gaudí & Modernism
SYMBOLISM, DECADENCE, ART NOUVEAU...
Modernisme is derived from the English Arts and Crafts movement and centered in Barcelona. It is characterized by the curve over the straight line, rich decoration, nature and asymmetry. The best known architects are Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Maria Jujol, Enrique Nieto... and Gaudí.
Antoni Plácid Guillem Gaudí i Cornet (1852-1926) came from a family of coppersmiths and studied architecture in Barcelona from 1873 to 1877. One of his major influence was the work of Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. At first his originality was only supported by the Count Eusebi Güell, a Catalan industrial and faithful friend of Gaudí, but with time his fame rose thanks to his clerical contacts with the Barcelonian bourgeoisie. .
Seven of his creations are now recognized as World Heritage by the UNESCO. We will visit La Sagrada Familia at the end of the tour, so you can take your time to go up the towers.
Gaudí's major works:
- 1 La Sagrada Familia (1883 - 2026?).
- 2 Casa Vicens (1884 - 1885).
- 3 Palau Güell (1885 - 1889).
- 4 College of the Teresianas (1888 - 1890).
- 5 Crypt of the Church of Colónia Güell (1898 - 1916).
